An exciting opportunity not often seen in the market has arisen for a talented Part-Time Legal Counsel to join a respected organisation New Zealand business in Auckland, supporting the Head of Legal. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, values flexibility, and wants to make a meaningful impact on business operations. You will play a pivotal part in building and scaling the legal function, developing systems that enable efficient processes, proactive risk management, and timely, commercially sound advice.

What you'll do:

  • Design and implement robust legal processes, workflows, and templates to streamline operations and ensure consistency across all business units.
  • Develop and maintain an effective legal matter management system that supports knowledge sharing through contract repositories, FAQs, and playbooks.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts while supporting contract lifecycle management and approvals for diverse business needs.
  • Provide timely legal advice on consumer law matters including CGA, FTA, privacy issues, advertising regulations, and compliance requirements relevant to New Zealand legislation.
  • Identify potential legal risks within business initiatives or ongoing operations and proactively develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and communicating internal policies while supporting governance initiatives such as board reporting and director training.

What you bring:

  • 3-6 years post-qualification experience (PQE) in commercial or consumer law obtained in-house or in private practice;
  • Admitted as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand;
  • Demonstrate excellent drafting skills alongside proven negotiation abilities;
  • Mediation experience is highly valued but not required;
  • Showcase both autonomy in managing tasks independently as well as a willingness to collaborate closely within cross-functional teams under time-sensitive conditions;
  • Experience using legal technology platforms or participating in process improvement projects is advantageous for driving operational efficiencies within the department.
