Job description

Join a Team That Makes a Difference - Legal Counsel Opportunity

Whangarei District Council is looking for a talented, community-minded lawyer to join our Legal Team. If you thrive on variety, enjoy the unique challenges of local government, and want your work to truly have an impact, this could be your ideal role.

As one of three Legal Counsel, you'll play a key role in guiding the organisation through a complex legal landscape. You'll ensure the Council remains compliant with relevant legislation while helping foster a culture that values sound legal advice and good governance across all levels of the organisation.

What We're Looking For:
We're after someone with sound judgment, strong attention to detail, and the communication skills to build trusted relationships across our diverse organisation. Ideally, you'll bring:

  • A current practising certificate with the New Zealand Law Society
  • An ability to assess legal risk and offer practical, innovative solutions
  • A knack for translating technical information into clear guidance for a wide range of stakeholders
  • A collaborative mindset and a proactive, adaptable approach to your work
  • An understanding of local government legislation and frameworks would be advantageous but not essential

We're open to varying levels of experience and place a strong emphasis on attitude, potential, and cultural fit. Whether you're early in your career or bring years of experience, what matters most is your ability to contribute meaningfully.

Why Work With Us?
At Whangarei District Council, you'll be part of a welcoming, supportive, and purpose-driven workplace. We're big enough to make a difference—but small enough that your voice is heard and your ideas matter.

You'll find a legal team that's close-knit, collaborative, and committed to delivering quality results for our community. And every day, you'll get to see the real-world impact of your work.

Ready to Apply?
If you're excited by the opportunity to support local democracy and build a better future for Whangārei, we'd love to hear from you. Submit your application online or reach out for a confidential conversation.
