Job summary

The University of Auckland seeks a Lecturer in Criminology to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise sub-doctoral and PhD students, and undertake high-quality, impactful research.

We value expertise across state crime, white-collar crime or green criminology, and a commitment to Indigenous perspectives, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and building strong relationships with Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Qualifications

• Teaching and/or research expertise in Criminology, with emphasis on Indigenous perspectives and social justice.
• Experience supervising postgraduate students and mentoring early-career researchers.
• Familiarity with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and engaging with Māori/Pacific communities.

Job Description

We are seeking a Lecturer in Criminology to join our team to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of sub-doctoral and PhD students, and to undertake high quality and impactful research.

This position offers the opportunity to build your academic career within a dynamic and successful Criminology programme. Criminology has grown significantly over the last ten years and represents one of the most popular majors in the Bachelor of Arts alongside growing postgraduate programmes.

Researchers and educators in Criminology at the University of Auckland take broadly critical approaches to the discipline, including an emphasis on Indigenous perspectives, restorative justice, hate crime, cybercrime, penology, gender, policing, prisons, cultural criminology, victimology and justice policies.

The successful candidate will have teaching and/or research expertise in one or more of the follow areas: state crime and state harm; white collar crime and/or corporate crime; or green/environmental criminology. A track record of or capacity to engage in public and/or community activism is also desirable. The School of Social Sciences is seeking to grow the number of staff with methodological and theoretical expertise in Indigenous, Kaupapa Māori, Pacific and/or Asian epistemologies.

We are looking for a colleague who can develop successful pedagogical approaches to teaching large undergraduate classes as well as teaching into our growing postgraduate offerings in Criminology. Existing experience in postgraduate supervision or mentoring will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be familiar with or open to learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) and be prepared to build or extend relationships with Māori and Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The workload allocation for this position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanentemployment agreement (subject to continuation).
The remuneration range is Lecturer step 1: $99,788.
