Job summary

Hamilton City Council in Hamilton Gardens is seeking an experienced Leading Hand to join the Grounds Maintenance Team. You will help lead a small crew, stay hands-on, coordinate daily work, and ensure the turf, gardens and infrastructure meet the high standards visitors expect.

This 12-month maternity cover role runs Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with some weekend rosters. You will supervise contractors, train staff, monitor safety, and work closely with horticulture, assets, customer

Qualifications

• Three years’ relevant industry experience.
• Previous experience supervising or leading staff.
• Level 3 Turf qualification.
• Growsafe qualification.
• New Zealand Class 1 Driver Licence.
• Confidence operating mechanical tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with different teams across Council.
• Good computer skills and the literacy and numeracy skills needed to complete records and administration accurately.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the team’s daily work and ensure maintenance programmes are completed on time and to the required standard.
• Work alongside the team maintaining the Gardens, grounds and associated areas.
• Oversee the maintenance of lawns and turf areas, including annual turf renovation programmes.
• Monitor machinery, vehicles and equipment and coordinate servicing, repairs and replacements as required.
• Help ensure water features and irrigation systems are maintained and operating effectively.
• Support the development of rosters for rubbish collection and weekend customer service requirements.
• Supervise contractors and contribute to special projects and asset maintenance.
• Coach and train team members, sharing your knowledge and helping build capability across the team.
• Work closely with our gardening, assets, customer service and events teams.
• Maintain a strong focus on health and safety for the team, contractors and visitors.
