Job description

Babbage Consultants Limited is an employee-owned multi-disciplinary practice offering tailored consultancy services across Architecture, Building Services, Civil Engineering, Land Development, Planning, Environmental and Structural disciplines throughout New Zealand.

Our Geotechnical team is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our close-knit team in the Babbage Geotechnical Laboratory, part of Babbage Consultants Limited.

This is a full-time position based in our centrally located Auckland laboratory — an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start or further develop their career in the geotechnical laboratory testing industry, or for an experienced technician seeking a new challenge.

About the role

Role involves laboratory testing of soil and rock, geotechnical laboratory and field equipment maintenance and calibration, and laboratory housekeeping. Occasional field work may also be required.

You will be trained in a range of geotechnical laboratory testing procedures. As proficiency is gained there will be an opportunity to be trained in progressively more advanced testing and to take on greater responsibility for both field and laboratory work.

About You

This position is ideal for a hard worker with a keenness to learn all aspects of the job and who demonstrates the following attributes:

  • Shows initiative and can work independently under minimum supervision.
  • Wishes to learn more about, and gain experience, in geotechnical and civil engineering testing.
  • Enjoys learning new skills and applies themselves to mastering those skills.
  • Is able to carry out physically demanding lab and field work, as well as heavy lifting (up to 25kgs).
  • Is able to tolerate repetitive, sometimes boring lab testing.
  • Doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty and carrying out regular cleaning and tidying of the lab.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills to accurately record observations.
  • Has a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel & Word.
  • Has a full driver license with no limitations.
