Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui ā Orotu in Hawke's Bay seeks a part-time Communications Advisor to promote Kaupapa Māori and protect the organisation's reputation. You will craft and deliver key korero, manage internal communications, and coordinate events from Te Whanganui ā Orotu.

The role requires a degree in communications or PR, experience in generalist communications, Te Reo Māori fluency, and strong web/social media literacy.

Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui Ā Orotu is an incorporated society based in Te Matau a Māui, Hawkes Bay. Throughout history, Te Whanganui ā Orotu was highly prized for its enormous mahinga kai, food sources and its access to major river systems and forest areas. These mahinga kai coming from the convergence of wai, bring together a convergence of people. Ngāti Tu, Ngāti Matepu, me Ngai Te Ruruku ki Tangoio ki te Raki. Ngāti Hinepare, Ngāti Maahu, me Ngai Tawhao ki te Uru - Ngāti Pārau ki te Tonga. Our collective vision is simple. We are expanding our team and seeking a part-time Communications Advisor to come on board.

Reporting directly to the Tumu Whakarae/CEO, the Kaitohu Pāpāho/Communications Advisorwill play a pivotal role in promoting and protecting the reputation of Te Taiwhenua. This role will encompass a wide range of responsibilities including crafting and delivering key korero, managing internal communications, coordinating events, producing articles and press releases, developing stakeholder engagement plans and overseeing social media all with a strong emphasis on Kaupapa Māori, Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga. Providing communication advice to the Tumu Whakarae and senior leadership, while collaborating closely with the wider whanau on all various projects is also essential to this role.

To be successful in this role you will need to have:

Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, marketing (or a related field) is preferred.

Experience in a generalist communication role managing a variety of communication projects across an organisation.

Previous experience working within a Māori organisation and knowledge of and/or fluency in written and spoken Te Reo Māori.

Strong web and social media literacy, with a solid understanding of modern digital communication tools and the ability to leverage analytics for data-driven decision-making.

Familiarity with media design and layout, web best practices, photography and videography.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with multiple groups and build and maintain positive working relationships at all levels.


Based in Te Whanganui a Orotu, this part-time position will suit someone wanting to make a meaningful impact in caring for our taonga and shaping our narrative. We are looking for a creative thinker excited to tackle various projects. For the right person, this could be a contractor arrangement that could be flexible with other personal commitments.
