SJS is a charitable organisation and incorporated society with a proud legacy, founded by Student Associations in 1982 to support students through employment. Since 1986, we have been proudly funded by the Ministry of Social Development and remain firmly focused on our core purpose: connecting students with meaningful work opportunities. By linking employers with the next generation of contributors, innovators, and leaders, we are committed to lifting the productivity and prosperity of Aotearoa.

About the Role

We are seeking passionate, values-driven individuals to join our Board. As a Board Member, you guide the strategic direction and governance of SJS, ensuring we continue to deliver impact and innovation for students and employers alike.

We are especially keen to hear from people with:

  • Recent tertiary experience.

  • Experience working with youth.

  • Experience in communications.

  • Experience in the employment or recruitment sector.

  • Lived experience of and connection to the realities of Te Ao Māori, or Pasifika.

Key Responsibilities

At SJS, Board Members play a vital role in upholding high standards of governance. Together with the Leadership team, Board Members are expected to embrace the following responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and set the direction for a sustainable and vibrant organisation.

  • Champion ethical and responsible decision-making, ensuring students remain at the centre of all decisions.

  • Safeguard the integrity of financial reporting and ensure transparent accountability.

  • Stay informed on trends, challenges, and political developments in the tertiary education and employment sectors.

  • Appoint, support, and regularly evaluate the performance of the Chief Executive.

  • Monitor and enhance the effectiveness of the organisation’s governance practices.

  • Approve annual budgets, major expenditures, and capital investments in line with the Financial Delegations Policy.

  • Establish and support committees as needed to enhance governance and fulfil specific duties.

Commitment Required

Three-year term with opportunity to seek reappointment. This includes a time commitment of a minimum of six meetings a year. The meetings generally run for 6-7 hours and are held on Fridays.

The time commitment is approximately three hours of preparation for each meeting, seven hours per board meeting, and additional hours on an ad hoc basis.

Geographic Considerations

Student Job Search operates nationwide, and the office is located in the Wellington CBD. If you live outside of Wellington, Student Job Search will cover the travel costs associated with attending in-person meetings.
