Job description

We Go Beyond for A Safer World

Te Tūranga - The Role

We are looking for an experienced and technically skilled IP Network Support Engineer to join our high-performing team at Tait Communications. This role supports the delivery and ongoing management of the Public Safety Network (PSN)—a nationally significant digital communications network supporting emergency services across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Based at our Christchurch head office and reporting to the IP Network Architect, you will be responsible for the provisioning, maintenance, and performance of the PSN IP network and associated platforms. You’ll work closely with engineering and support teams to design robust network solutions, integrate IP infrastructure, and ensure the network’s performance aligns with the highest standards of reliability and security.

This is a dynamic and hands-on engineering role with critical responsibilities across the full project lifecycle-from architecture design to post-implementation support. The role includes participation in an on-call roster to ensure ongoing network support and responsiveness.

The duties of the role will include

  • Collaborating with the IP Network Architect to define and validate network architectures and high-level solutions.
  • Generating IP network designs that integrate with Tait LMR systems.
  • Provisioning routers, switches, DMR links, firewalls, and related IP equipment.
  • Developing and maintaining provisioning, maintenance and operations procedures.
  • Supporting integration of provisioned equipment into the network management system (NMS).
  • Providing post-implementation network support, including diagnosing faults and outages.
  • Participating in verification and acceptance testing and executing production upgrades.
  • Training and mentoring engineers and providing handover training to Support teams.
  • Engaging with third-party partners during project delivery.

Ō pūkenga - About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a bachelor's degree, Postgraduate qualification, or other relevant tertiary qualification (NZQA approved), and hold a Cisco Certified Network Professional Service Provider (or equivalent) certification.

You will also have practical experience in:

  • Provisioning, managing and supporting IP networks (including DMR equipment).
  • Firewall provisioning and operation.
  • Performance monitoring and capacity planning of network infrastructure.
  • Service overlay technologies including IPSEC, GRE, MPLS, VRF, and VPLS.
  • Underlay technologies including MPLS, RSVP, and Segment Routing.
  • Routing protocols including OSPF, ISIS and BGP.
  • Working with tools and technologies such as Nokia NFM-P, NEC UNMS-EMS, Fortinet product suite, and NetBox.
  • Operating in multi-vendor network environments.
  • Experience with Nokia NFM-P, and Nokia SAR devices is preferred.
  • Experience with network automation tools and Python programming language is preferred.

You bring strong diagnostic skills, a solutions-oriented mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Your ability to collaborate and communicate with both technical and non-technical teams will be key to your success.
