About the Role

Nelson Hospital is seeking three committed and experienced Intensive Care Anaesthetists to join our high-performing multidisciplinary team. This permanent part‑time role (0.75 FTE/60 hours fortnightly or 1:7 on‑call) offers a rewarding opportunity to provide specialist care across theatre and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within a secondary hospital serving the top of the South Island.

The role includes management of critically unwell patients, provision of elective and acute anaesthesia services, and participation in the on‑call roster. You will respond swiftly to emergency situations, provide expert medical care to critical patients in the ICU, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans. The ICU is working toward CICM level2 accreditation.

The Anaesthesia and Intensive Care service provides comprehensive peri‑operative and critical care to a diverse regional population. We support departments such as Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Mental Health, and the Emergency department. The service also offers anaesthesia for visiting subspecialty surgeons in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastics, and Maxillofacial Surgery.

About you

• Have essential senior experience in providing intensive care for patients with acute, severe, and life‑threatening conditions.
• Be an anaesthetist with intensive‑care expertise; however, all medical specialists with intensive‑care experience will also be considered.
• Be eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with vocational scope in Anaesthesia or a relevant vocational scope with the Medical Council of NewZealand.
