Job summary

New Zealand Government in Wellington is seeking an Information Security Analyst to join the Security Operations Centre. You will monitor security activity, investigate alerts and support incident response using Microsoft Sentinel, Defender, Entra ID and related tools.

This hands-on role offers collaboration with experienced analysts and requires clear documentation of findings, actions and outcomes, with a commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Experience in security operations, incident response or a closely related technical role.
  • Apply structured analysis to alerts, logs and technical evidence without jumping to conclusions.
  • Communicate clearly and build effective relationships with technical and business stakeholders.
  • Show initiative, sound judgement, attention to detail and a strong commitment to learning.
  • Commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi and an understanding of Te Ao Māori.
  • Experience with Microsoft Sentinel, Defender, Entra ID, ServiceNow, Qualys or similar security tools; relevant tertiary study, industry certifications or equivalent practical experience; ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and triage alerts from Microsoft Sentinel, Defender and other security channels.
  • Investigate phishing, malware, suspicious access, lost devices and related security events.
  • Manage day-to-day security incidents and requests using approved procedures and playbooks.
  • Document findings, actions and outcomes clearly, and escalate when appropriate.

Join the Ministry's Security Operations Centre in one of two permanent Information Security Analyst roles. You will help protect our people, information, systems and services by monitoring security activity, investigating alerts and requests, and supporting an effective response to cyber security incidents.This is a hands‑on operational role with broad exposure across Microsoft security tooling, email and endpoint security, identity and access, incident response and security administration. Utu ā-tau/Salary

The appointing salary for this role will be between $88,455 and $113,639 based on skills and experience.
