Job summary

OpenStarTechnologies in Wellington, New Zealand, invites applications for a role in the Magnet Technologies team to model and analyse high-temperature superconducting magnets and power systems at the heart of our levitated dipole reactor. You will translate system-level goals into validated magnet designs using multiphysics simulation.

Ideal candidates are enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in physics or engineering and have experience with ANSYS, COMSOL or FEMM, plus Python for data

Qualifications

  • Experience with multiphysics simulation software (e.g. ANSYS, COMSOL, FEMM).
  • Working knowledge of Python or a similar language for modelling and data analysis.
  • Ability to work through and solve highly multidisciplinary engineering problems.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Great team member with clear communication and collaboration skills.
  • Innate desire to learn, innovate, and critique ideas including one's own.
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in physics, electrical, mechanical, or materials engineering, or a related discipline

Responsibilities

  • Electromagnetic & Multiphysics Modelling
  • Optimise magnet and power system designs using multiphysics simulation software (e.g. ANSYS EM, ANSYS Structural, COMSOL, FEMM)
  • Model system components such as core magnets and HTS transformer rectifiers, translating system-level performance goals into design parameters
  • Develop design tools, data analysis software, and algorithms in Python or similar
  • Design Support
  • Develop specifications for magnets and related components based on system design and performance goals
  • Analyse design trade-offs and document recommendations supported by your modelling results
  • Reporting & Collaboration
  • Track and report results and progress against project goals and milestones
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal engineering stakeholders on model assumptions and findings
