Whangaparāoa College is seeking a dynamic and innovative Head of Department – Trades Academy to lead our expanding vocational pathways, with Building & Construction as a key part of the portfolio. The Whangapāroa Trades Academy intends to prepare students for the future of building. The program will include modern building approaches and building science principles, and ensure that students will “stand out from the crowd” within a competitive industry.

The HOD Trades Academy will:

  • Lead and manage the development of the new Whangaparāoa College Trades Academy for the 2026 school year and beyond.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a 5 year strategic plan for expanding the Trades Academy at Whangaparāoa College.
  • Have an understanding of modern building practices and building science principles such as moisture control, thermal performance, airtightness, thermal bridging, and Homestar and Passive House Certification; or be willing to undertake further training in these areas, to support the students in their learning.
  • Support students in achieving L3 BCITO standards while engaging safely in our on property renovation worksite.
  • Develop strong partnerships with industry, training organisations, and the wider community.
  • Oversee curriculum planning, assessment, and resourcing for the Trades Academy.
  • Work collaboratively within the Technology Faculty specifically supporting senior BCON classes as a pathway towards Trades Academy enrolment.
