Job summary

Te Papa Atawhai seeks a Heritage and Visitor Ranger (Fixed-Term) to maintain tracks, huts, and facilities across South Westland. You’ll deliver practical conservation work, support visitor safety, and report on field activities from Haast to remote sites.

The role requires a full NZ Driver’s Licence, robust physical fitness, safety awareness, and strong teamwork with the ability to work independently in diverse environments. Accommodation options may be available.

Qualifications

• Full drivers' licence required and ability to manoeuvre a trailer.
• Strong practical, hands-on field skills for maintainance in backcountry settings.
• NZQA qualifications with use of chainsaws, weed eaters, scrub bars and 4WDS.
• Strong health and safety focus and fitness for remote fieldwork.

Responsibilities

• Maintain front-country tracks, huts and visitor amenities.
• Provide visitor information and support visitor safety.
• Complete work reports and timesheets using mobile apps.
• Monitor and manage risk in high-use visitor areas and support emergency response.
