Job summary

The New Zealand Government is seeking a summer conservation and visitor operations assistant based in Karamea. You will contribute to maintaining tracks, huts, campsites, and visitor facilities within public conservation areas such as Heaphy Track and Kohaihai Campsite.

This hands-on, varied role offers an opportunity to develop practical conservation and recreation management skills in remote environments, with a fixed-term contract from November to May 2027.

Qualifications

• remote and rugged environments experience will be valuable

Responsibilities

• Manage assigned project work and day-to-day operational tasks
• Maintain backcountry and front-country tracks and visitor infrastructure
• Carry out hut, campsite, and amenity maintenance and cleaning
• Support conservation and heritage work programmes across the district
• Assist with vegetation control, scrub work, and general asset maintenance
• Work in remote locations, including overnight and multi-day backcountry trips
• Engage positively with visitors to provide a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience
