Health Care Assistant
Everil Orr Living is a boutique retirement village and care centre in the heart of Mt Albery. Everil Orr Living is owned and operated by Airedale Property Trust (APT). Profits generated by APT go towards supporting the social and community works of its sister organisation, Lifewise. Together, the Three Trusts (MMN, APT and Lifewise) hold and manage directly a portfolio of social housing, retirement villages, retail and residential properties.
The purpose of the Health Care Assistant role is to deliver high quality care to residents based on their individual care plan, demonstrating a commitment to best practice and maintaining an optimal level of dignity, comfort and quality of life for residents.

What You’re Responsible For
- Delivery of care: Assist and work under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse to meet the care needs of residents
- Be familiar with the Care Plan of each resident and provide personal care to the resident according to the Care Plan
- Participate in the handover at the beginning of each shift
- Ensure that all equipment and supplies are being used correctly and economically according to Everil Orr’s procedures
- Ensure that food and fluids are provided to the resident in a manner that promotes adequate nutrition
- Report any changes in the resident’s condition to the Registered Nurse
- Welcome new residents and help them settle in
- Answer call bells promptly and act on resident requests for assistance
- Only participate in medication administration after you have been deemed competent and this has been documented and authorised by a Registered Nurse
- Work in a professional and ethical manner at all times
- Promote a safe, hygienic, presentable, comfortable and harmonious environment
Record Keeping
- Write progress notes for each resident at the end of each shift
- Accurately document resident information on relevant software
Effective Communication
- Communicate with all residents, family, whānau, visitors and members of the external health team in a friendly and courteous manner
- Give adequate explanation and reassurance to residents before and during all nursing procedures
- Work with colleagues cooperatively, sharing information and knowledge appropriately and contributing to a strong team culture
- Relay information promptly and accurately
- Advise the Registered Nurse or Care Manager of adverse issues as they arise
- Pay attention to the resident’s cultural needs and act in a culturally safe and sensitive way at all times
- Attend and provide input into staff and other meetings when required
Confidentiality
- Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained from working at Everil Orr
- Maintain confidentiality of other staff member’s personal information
- Adhere to Everil Orr’s social media policy
Training and Professional Development
- Show commitment to personal development and competency
- Attend education sessions, maintain mandatory training requirements and keep a record of professional development attended
- Participate in an annual performance appraisal and use the opportunity to set and attain goals
- Complete HCA core competencies relevant to work area
Health and Safety
- Ensure that all work is undertaken in accordance with The Three Trusts’ Health and Safety policies and procedures
- Report and document any resident or staff accidents, injuries or near misses to the Registered Nurse or their Manager immediately
- Attend moving and handling training and use techniques that are safe for residents and self
- Take necessary precautions to prevent injury or accidents occurring, reporting any hazards/concerns regarding safety to the Registered Nurse
- Work within organisational Infection Control and Restraint policies and procedures
- Participate in maintaining a safe environment including reporting any faulty or damaged equipment
Participation in Quality Assurance
- Contribute positively to quality assurance programmes and results
- Demonstrate a commitment to a culture of continuous quality improvement
Compliance with Administrative policies
- Observe The Three Trusts’ Code of Conduct
- Adhere to The Three Trust’s policies and procedures
- Promote a high standard of personal hygiene and professional presentation
- Follow correct procedures when applying for annual leave or taking sick leave
- Ensure a professional appearance, including complying with the Everil Orr dress code
- Understand the position of Māori as the tangata whenua. Commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and an openness to understanding the application of the articles of Te Tiriti in the context of The Lifewise Trust.
- Promotes a culture where health and safety is seen as integral to success through planning, delivery, monitoring and review of health and safety processes.

- Experience of working in a similar role
- Strong time management and organisational skills
- Flexibility and willingness to undertake a wide variety of tasks
- Relates easily to a wide diversity of people, including other staff, residents and their families and friends
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
- Ability to be engaged in physical activity for an extended period of time, including standing, bending and lifting with the use of appropriate equipment
- Qualification in a related field is desirable
- A current first aid certificate
