Job summary

AFFCO New Zealand is seeking a Health & Safety Coordinator for the Imlay site in Whanganui. You will support the Health and Safety Lead with implementing the site’s H&S management system and ensure a safe workplace for all staff.

You will handle incident reporting, audits and proactive safety programs, building strong relationships across the site and driving continuous safety improvement.

Qualifications

• Experience in a high-risk manufacturing/processing environment.
• Qual in occupational health and safety or substantial relevant experience.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated Health & Safety Coordinator to join our Imlay site located in Whanganui. Reporting to the Health and Safety Lead, this role provides essential support in implementing AFFCO Imlay's Health and Safety Management System and ensuring our people remain healthy and safe at work.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll assist with incident response, audits, and proactive safety programmes, while building strong relationships across the site.

Key responsibilities include:

• Support the Health & Safety Lead in implementing SPM's H&S Plans and programmes.
• Coordination and administration of H&S Plan and initiatives.
• Assist with incident reporting, investigation, and follow-up actions.
• Help coordinate emergency preparedness and response activities.
• Contribute to hazard identification, risk assessments, and monitoring of critical controls.
• Assist with scheduling and conducting site audits, inspections, and safety observations.
• Promote employee engagement in health and safety initiatives, applying SafePlus cultural maturity principles.
• Provide day-to-day guidance and support to staff on H&S matters.
• Champion continuous improvement and contribute to building a strong safety culture.
• Drafting and creation of the monthly and annual reports.
• Completion of Purchase Orders.
• Using Assura 'IPRS' Software for data extraction, analysis and reporting.
• Maintaining Health & Safety communications across the site.
• Point of contact for injury management including ACC claim management.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following experience, qualifications and skills:

• Experience working in a high-risk environment (manufacturing, processing, or similar).
• A qualification in occupational health and safety or relevant experience.
• Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
• Practical experience in hazard management, incident reporting, audits, and safety procedures.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks.
• A proactive, professional attitude and willingness to learn and grow.
