Port of Tauranga provides customers with highly effective supply chains through investment in regional feeder ports, inland freight hubs, cargo handling expertise and logistics services.

The Port’s facilities in Tauranga include the country’s largest and fastest-growing container terminal, extensive bulk cargo wharves and storage facilities, and bunker berths.

We are committed to being a Zero Harm workplace and are constantly striving to improve our health and safety performance, with the goal of achieving an incident free workplace. Our work environment is host to heavy industry with multiple operators operating in shared work areas. Consultation, cooperation, and coordination of effective risk mitigation is essential between numerous port operating entities. Our expectation is that everyone takes personal accountability for the safety of themselves and all those operating around them.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a capable, passionate and experienced Health and Safety Advisor to join our dedicated team.

You will be accountable for embedding and nurturing a culture of safety and wellbeing best practice, underpinned by the pursuit of continuous improvement. As New Zealand’s largest and most efficient port company, we operate within a dynamic and challenging environment, underpinned by our core value of a “safety always” mindset.

You’ll work alongside a wide range of diverse teams and individuals, building strong relationships, enhancing capabilities and championing smarter, safer ways of working. Your ability to adapt, listen, and lead in the most appropriate and effective way will be key to embedding health and safety practices that reflect the needs of our people operating in a range of vibrant operations environments.

This is a hands-on operational role, with high levels of autonomy. Partnering with the business will be key to ensuring health and safety initiatives are sustainably embedded in our culture. The successful candidate will be practical, solution focused, and enjoy working as part of a small, tight-knit multidisciplinary team.

This will include:

  • Partnering with teams to provide support, knowledge and guidance to enhance sustained health and safety performance.
  • Working collaboratively across departments, building trust and influence through strong relationships and shared goals.
  • Continually challenging the norm in search of initiatives and technologies to further enhance health and safety performance.
  • Leading by example demonstrating the core principles of a positive and strong health and safety culture.

We’re looking for a candidate with proven experience in high-risk dynamic operational environments, ideally with previous experience in either construction, ports, or heavy industry.

To be successful in your application, you will be:

  • Confident to work across organisational boundaries to influence and persuade stakeholders.
  • An innovative and open-minded change agent with a passion for motivating high performing and diverse teams.
  • A confident decision maker with a talent for providing clear direction to operations teams and stakeholders.
  • Able to communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Highly collaborative, ensuring that the business is guided by best practice and subject matter experts to enable commercial agility.
  • Flexible to adapt to the needs of a 24/7 operational business, ensuring a high degree of resiliency and reliability, to respond to both planned and unplanned events.

Ideally the successful applicant will hold a qualification in Health and Safety. Experience in operating within a single site multi-PCBU heavy industrial operation would be an advantage.

The role requires a current driver’s licence and legal entitlement to work in New Zealand.

Note: Port of Tauranga is an alcohol and drug free workplace. The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol test and background checks.
