Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking a Health Data Analyst to analyse health service activity and performance across the organisation. You will work with datasets from National Collections, RAPID, and regional sources to identify trends and provide evidence-based insights.

You will develop dashboards, support decision-making, and respond to parliamentary questions, information requests, and media inquiries. A keen eye for governance and equity in health is essential.

Qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification in business analysis, data science or statistics.
• 3–5 years' experience in a similar analytical role within a large organisation.
• Strong understanding of analytics fundamentals and how data and insights create value.
• Experience with data visualisation tools and analytical techniques, including dashboards.
• Excellent communication skills to present findings to diverse audiences.
• Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity in health.
• Willingness to learn and use AI-enabled tools responsibly.

About the Role

As a Health Data Analyst, you'll provide analysis of health service activity and performance across Health New Zealand, working particularly closely with Hospital & Specialist Services and Commissioning. Your insights will help inform decision-making and support responses to a wide range of important requests, including Parliamentary Questions, Official Information Act requests, media enquiries and ad hoc analysis. You'll work with data from National Collections, the RAPID dataset, and district and regional sources, bringing together information from different systems to identify trends, answer questions and provide evidence-based insights. You'll also have the opportunity to embrace new ways of working, using approved AI-enabled tools such as Microsoft Copilot to support information discovery, analytical efficiency and reporting — while applying your own professional judgement and human oversight. This is a role where your analytical skills can have a genuine impact, helping turn health data into clear information that supports better decisions and outcomes.

About the Team / Service

You’ll work with colleagues and stakeholders across Health New Zealand, as well as organisations including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Disabled People and Cancer Control Agency. That means your work will contribute to conversations and decisions that reach well beyond your immediate team. You'll have plenty of variety — from exploratory analysis and dashboard development through to responding to time-sensitive requests and supporting larger projects. It's an environment where you'll continue to develop your technical skills while gaining a broader understanding of the health system.

About you

You’re curious, analytical and naturally interested in understanding not just what the data says, but why it matters. You’ll be comfortable working with different datasets and stakeholders and turning complex information into clear, practical insights.

You’ll bring:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in areas such as business analysis, business insights, data science or statistics.
• 3–5 years' experience in a similar analytical role within a large organisation, across the public or private sector.
• A strong understanding of analytics fundamentals and how data and insights can create business and customer value.
• Experience with data visualisation tools and analytical techniques, including requirements gathering, data cleansing, dashboard development and process mapping.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to present and explain analytical findings to different audiences.
• Experience applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action and an understanding of the importance of equity in health.
• A willingness to learn and embrace emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve analytical practice and stakeholder outcomes.
• An understanding of generative AI, automation or AI-assisted analytics and how these can be applied responsibly within a governed data environment.

It would be an advantage if you also have:

• Knowledge of the New Zealand health sector and government environment.
• Advanced experience with tools such as Power BI, Qlik, SQL and MS Excel.
• Experience with BI tools, data visualisation platforms and data warehousing concepts.
• Strong critical thinking and sound judgement, with the ability to develop options and provide evidence-based advice.
• An understanding of generative AI, automation or AI-assisted analytics and how these can be applied responsibly within a governed data environment.
