Job summary

A leading intermodal freight hub in Wellington seeks a skilled Fitter to join their Engineering & Maintenance team. You will be responsible for ensuring the electrical and mechanical integrity of assets through effective maintenance and repair. Ideal candidates will have a Level 4 engineering qualification, rigging experience, and be able to work in various environments, including heights and confined spaces. Overview

Your New Company: CentrePort is the country’s most significant intermodal freight hub. It encompasses a strategic combination of port facilities, distribution centres, and transport infrastructure. As a critical gateway for imports and exports, CentrePort handles a diverse range of cargo, including containerized goods, bulk commodities, vehicles and more.

The facilities at CentrePort include berths for container ships, roll-on/roll-off vessels, and bulk carriers. Additionally, it offers extensive storage and handling capabilities, with modern container terminals, warehouses and distribution centres.

CentrePort’s strategic location provides access to key transportation networks, including road, rail and coastal shipping routes. This connectivity enables efficient movement of goods to and from the Port, supporting trade and economic activities both for Wellington and New Zealand.

They are currently seeking a skilled & versatile Fitter to join their growing Engineering & Maintenance team.

Your New Role:

Your expertise will play a crucial role in ensuring the electrical & mechanical integrity of CentrePort’s assets through effective maintenance and repair programs. In alignment with CentrePort’s values of working together as one team, you will be working closely with the other trades completing maintenance work on a variety of machinery. This includes servicing of container cranes, heavy plant equipment and heavy machinery, pumps, controls as well as diagnosing breakdowns associated with other mechanical systems. This is a challenging role where no two days are the same. If you’re someone who thrives in these environments, and really values the quality of your work, then this might be the role for you!

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Minimum of a National Certificate in Maintenance and Diagnostics in Mechanical Engineering (Level 4), or the National Certificate in Engineering – Heavy (Level 4), or the National Certificate in Engineering Fabrication – Welding (Level 4), or equivalent qualification
  • Rigging experience in heavy engineering would be ideal
  • Must be able to work from heights & in confined spaces
  • Industrial and mechanically minded and willing to do on-call work
  • Experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy machinery, including electric welding, hydraulic repairs and low voltage wiring repairs
  • Strong work ethic & strong ability to problem solve
