Job summary

Invercargill City Council is seeking a Financial Accountant to join our Financial Services team in Invercargill, NZ. You will report to the Manager - Financial Services and work with the department to strengthen financial operations across the council.

The role focuses on delivering the consolidated Annual Report, maintaining best practices, and liaising with external auditors for an efficient audit process.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting or equivalent
• Chartered Accountant designation (CA/CAANZ)
• Minimum 5 years post graduate experience in financial and/or management accounting in large, complex organisations
• Positive hands-on approach, ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
• Good attention to detail and strong communication across departments
• Ability to analyse data and present financial information clearly to non-accountants
• Proficiency in accounting systems and advanced spreadsheet modelling is advantageous

Responsibilities

• Prepare GST, FBT, petroleum and income tax returns
• Prepare or review key control reconciliations
• Prepare consolidated group financial statements for the Council and subsidiaries

Our friendly Financial Services team are seeking a Financial Accountant

Reporting to the Manager - Financial Services and working closely with other members of the Financial Services Department, your strong financial accounting background, positive attitude and confidence means you will enhance the financial services team and be a valued business advisor for the varied aspects of our organisation.

The key focus for this role is the delivery of the consolidated Annual Report while maintaining best practice skills and process, and undertaking the key liaison with external auditors to ensure an efficient audit process.

The other responsibilities for the role include:

• preparation of GST, FBT, petroleum and income tax returns,
• preparation or review of key control reconciliations,
• preparing the consolidated group financial statements for the Council group
• application of public benefit entity accounting and reporting standards to council and group transactions,
• continuously improving process and procedures to drive efficiencies

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting, or equivalent tertiary qualification
• Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Chartered Accountant designation
• A minimum of 5 years' post graduate experience in financial and/or management accounting within large and complicated organisations
• demonstrate a positive hands on approach to your work and have ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
• have good attention to detail
• have good communicate skills and the ability to work with people from various areas.
• be able to analyse data at a high level and communicate financial information in a language that non-accountants can understand
• Being proficient in integrated accounting systems and having advanced spreadsheeting skills and prior excel modelling experience would certainly be an advantage.
