Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is seeking a Family Violence Response Specialist in Auckland. You will assess family harm with interagency partners including the New Zealand Police, and contribute to safety and wellbeing of children and whānau.

The role is based at Balmoral Police Station and involves coordinating the response, leading and supporting our work with Police and partner agencies, with hours 6.30am–2.30pm, Monday to Friday, on a fixed term/secondment until April 2027.

Qualifications

  • An experienced and qualified social worker with great safety assessment skills, clear communication and relationship management.
  • Clear understanding of Oranga Tamariki thresholds; part of daily Safety Assessment Meetings with Police and other stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, Vulnerable Children Act 2014 and other relevant legislation
  • Experience with tamariki and whānau and working with diverse cultural backgrounds, especially Māori and Pacific cultures
  • Knowledge of family violence pathways and theories of family violence and interventions
  • Understanding of NGO and public sector context and cross-cultural practices (tikanga Māori and Pacific cultures)
  • A full, clean NZ driver’s licence
  • A Social Work Qualification recognised by the SWRB or current SWRB registration and Annual Practising Certificate
  • Knowledge of cross-cultural practices including tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ culture

Responsibilities

  • Assess family harm and plan interventions in conjunction with interagency partners and NZ Police.
  • Coordinate response and facilitate, lead, guide and support work with NZ Police to reduce family harm.
  • Work with partner agencies to ensure the safety and best interests of children and young people.
  • Contribute to safety assessments in daily meetings (SAM) and uphold professional standards and thresholds.

Our Family Violence Response Specialist is responsible for assessing family harm and, in conjunction with interagency partners, and the New Zealand Police you will be instrumental in planning and implementing interventions that contribute to the safety and well-being of families.

The position will be based at Balmoral Police Station and will require you to coordinate our response and to facilitate, lead, guide and support our work with the New Zealand Police to reduce family harm. You will also be workingclosely with our partner agencies to ensure the safety and best interests of children and young people are at the centre of what we do.

This is a Fixed Term / Secondment Opportunity and the hours will be 6.30am - 2.30pm Monday to Friday.

Key requirements of the role include:

  • An experienced and qualified social worker with great safety assessment skills, clear communication and relationship management.
  • Clear understanding of Oranga Tamariki's thresholds, as you will be part of the daily Safety Assessment Meetings (SAM) in conjunction with Police and other family violence stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, the Vulnerable Children's Act 2014 and other relevant legislation
  • Experience working with tamariki and whanau as well as proven successful experience in working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, in particular Maori and Pacific cultures
  • Knowledge of family violence pathways
  • Knowledge of the theories of family violence and interventions, and associated concepts/constructs
  • An understanding of Non-Government sector (NGO) and the public sector context within which OT works
  • A full, clean and valid New Zealand driver's licence
  • You must have a Social Work Qualification that is recognised by the New Zealand Social Work Registration Board (SWRB) orhave full SWRB registration and current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
