Manuka Health in Wellington, NZ is seeking an Agricultural and Food Science Technician to oversee honey extraction operations and lead a small team across multiple production functions. The role includes coordinating procurement, inbound goods, and dispatch activities to ensure efficient throughput and quality control.

You will support recruitment, onboarding, and staff development while maintaining batch integrity, documentation, and SOP compliance.

Qualifications

  • Strong organisational skills to manage batch flow, box tracking, and drum identification.
  • Mechanically minded with ability to learn, operate and troubleshoot extraction equipment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office for data entry and reporting.
  • Valid forklift licence for movement of boxes and drums.
  • Demonstrated leadership to motivate and direct staff and maintain a safe, productive team culture.

Responsibilities

  • Agricultural and Food Science Technician
Leadership
  • Support recruitment for required roles in partnership with the manager and HR Business Partner.
  • Assist with candidate screening and recommend suitable applicants for interview.
  • Lead interviews and support candidate selection.
  • Coordinate new employee inductions and provide required onboarding materials.
  • Identify and coordinate staff training needs.
  • Lead the team to achieve outcomes while fostering a positive performance culture.
Extraction of honey
  • Manage honey extraction operations and identify opportunities to improve throughput and extraction times.
  • Check and record incoming honey box paperwork, ensuring correct batching and storage.
  • Coordinate pallet decontamination and hot room loading.
  • Maintain batch integrity throughout the extraction process, from receipt to full drum storage.
  • Lead and motivate the team to meet daily production targets.
  • Check and record honey batch data and E-Cert documentation accurately.
  • Maintain extraction room records, filing systems and drum traceability documentation.
  • Monitor and control factors that may impact honey quality.
  • Sample batches during extraction and complete all required paperwork accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and organised extraction facility.
Procurement
  • Develop relationships with suppliers to ensure high-quality service and supply.
  • Monitor the levels of consumables and reorder as required
  • Ensure pricing and approval is requested where appropriate.
Inwards Goods
  • Identify bulk products (drums and boxes) as it arrives
  • Check associated paperwork is received and correct
  • Work with the Yard Manager to ensure boxes are organised with the correct paperwork.
Dispatch
  • Communicate and work effectively to return extracted boxes to the regions
  • Communicate and work effectively to send honey drums to Te Awamutu warehouse.
  • Accurately record the required dispatch details
  • Ensure the extraction equipment is operated properly and safely within recommended operating requirements
  • Ensure the plant is maintained and operated to the correct standards. Ensure there is a maintenance schedule in place that is adhered to at all times.
  • Effectively meet all extraction schedules
  • Ensure a full maintenance programme is in place and adhered to at all times
  • Ensure that any problems are reported where required in a timely manner
  • Minimise downtime of machinery through the peak season through proactive management
Audits
  • Asist with internal and external audits
  • Update audit plans and related documents as required
  • Ensure preseason check are completed and SOPs are updated as required.
Non-Seasonal
  • Cleaning of honey drums and other apiculture assets.
  • Perform a thorough post-season deep cleaning of the facility, ensuring all equipment and areas meet the highest cleanliness standards.
