Job description

Environmental Restoration - Field Operator

The role will involve ungulate and biodiversity monitoring, pest animal and pest plant control, bait station servicing and assisting with native restoration projects across the Greater Wellington region and lower North Island.

A lot of the work is in native bush, regional parks and backcountry environments. You'll regularly be working off-track, carrying a loaded pack and equipment through steep and uneven country, and working away from vehicles for extended periods.

The role also involves regular travel and periods of 5–10 days away from home, depending on the project.

This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors and wants to progress their career in conservation, or someone starting out who wants to build solid practical field experience.

Key responsibilities

Servicing and maintaining bait stations.

Ungulate, pest animal and biodiversity monitoring.

Pest animal and pest plant control.

Navigating and working safely off-track in steep and difficult terrain.

Carrying a loaded pack and field equipment through bush for extended periods.

Working independently in the field for up to 8 hours at a time.

Recording fieldwork and monitoring information using GPS and digital systems.

Assisting with native planting and planting maintenance.

General field and equipment maintenance.

Working as part of a small team as well as independently.

About you

We're looking for someone who is reliable, fit and has a good attitude to field work.

You will need to be:

Comfortable carrying a loaded pack and equipment over several hours.

Able to walk and work off-track in steep bush and difficult terrain.

Comfortable working independently in the field for up to 8 hours at a time.

Comfortable working in poor weather when required.

Comfortable being away from vehicles and formed tracks for extended periods.

Able to stay away from home for periods of 5–10 days.

Able to follow field procedures, work safely and complete work to a good standard.

Able to record field information accurately.

A full NZ driver's licence is preferred.

Previous experience in conservation, pest control, forestry, farming, landscaping or other outdoor work would be useful, but isn't essential. We're more interested in finding someone who is reliable, physically capable, keen to learn and able to work to a good standard.
