Great Job & People: Our Environmental Monitoring Team operates a network of assets monitoring rainfall, rivers, lakes, sea level, water quality and meteorology across the Tasman district. Become involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of monitoring sites, plus operate a wide variety of technology including data loggers, remote control boats and drones as you maintain the environmental monitoring network. The team collects water quality samples and monitors ecology in rivers and groundwater.

You will work as part of a skilled technical field team, using initiative and drive to help achieve team outcomes. You will maintain and develop strong relationships with other teams in the Environmental Science Group and support Council's efforts in resource management, water allocation, engineering design and flood warning. The role contributes to creating and maintaining a data archive that is used heavily by the local community as well as for national and international studies.

While you will spend time travelling the rivers, mountains and coastline of the district that boasts high sunshine hours, there will also be an equal amount of office-based work. The role ensures instruments meet calibration, data is processed for quality assurance and contributes to the environmental data archive. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in data analysis and maintaining data telemetry systems.

  • Ensure instruments meet calibration standards and data is processed for quality assurance.
  • Contribute to data analysis and maintenance of data telemetry systems.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the Environmental Science Group and support resource management, water allocation, engineering design and flood warning.
About you / Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years field environmental data collection experience.
  • NZ Diploma in Field Hydrology preferred; relevant practical qualification with aptitude for maths/physics and a keen willingness to learn is also welcome.
  • Training in all aspects of field hydrology and environmental monitoring provided.
  • Remuneration appropriate to level of competency; Trainee or Environmental Monitoring Officer role may be possible.
  • Enjoy working with technology and diagnosing technical problems; comfortable outdoors in varied terrains (environment can be physically demanding).
  • Confident swimmer with a reasonable level of fitness; able to work autonomously and share ideas within a team.
