Job description

Thriving together- mō te taiao, mō ngā tāngata.

  • Based in Tauranga in the Sunny Bay of Plenty
  • Permanent, full time role

If you want to bring your existing engineering skills and experience to help us to deliver meaningful work for our environment and our people, while having mentoring and support to assist you to reach your true potential as an environmental engineer then we want to hear from you.

He kōrero whakamārama mō tēnei tūranga | About the role

Being an Environmental Engineer at Bay of Plenty Regional Council means being part of a committed and experienced team of professionals working on key engineering challenges, delivering our crucial community outcomes: a healthy environment, freshwater for life, safe and resilient communities, and a vibrant region.

In the role, you will regularly provide quality engineering advice and technical expertise on flood and erosion risk management to a wide range of groups, organisations and the community for regional plans, strategies, policy and guideline development. You will also support resource consent processing and provide compliance advice to a high standard. Initial support will be available if you are still developing in this area.

You will undertake hydrologic and hydraulic investigations and deliver best-in-class engineering design in various river, drainage, coastal and soil conservation activities. You will also produce engineering reports, tender and contract documentation, and sometimes oversee the completion of engineering works and projects. You will support flood forecasting and flood response activities as an active member of the flood management team.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake specialist engineering projects where required.

Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience

Ideally, you will have a recognised degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline with at least three years of demonstrated engineering knowledge associated with hydrology, hydrologic and hydraulic studies, and innovative and effective management approaches of rivers, canals, floodplains, lakes and coastal processes to reduce flood risk as well as a general understanding of environmental effects and New Zealand specific environmental regulations.

However, if you have a Diploma in Environmental Engineering rather than a degree, and you can demonstrate at least ten years of relevant experience, drive, commitment and passion for your work. We also want to hear from you.

Of course you will also need to possess good computing ability (MS Office, ArcGIS) and working towards membership of Engineering New Zealand (MEngNZ) would be a real advantage.

We manage the effects of people’s use of freshwater, land, air and coastal water. You will be joining a motivated team who enjoy making a difference for their community and working to protect our environment in the Bay of Plenty. We are a values-driven organisation, and we have a reputation for looking after our people.

Who you are is important to us. We welcome diversity as an opportunity to grow our teams and are keen to support people of all gender identities, ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, religions, and disabilities/abilities.
