Job description

Silver Fern Farms is seeking an Environment Operations Engineer to play a central role in our IT Infrastructure team. You'll be responsible for designing, provisioning, and maintaining secure, stable, and scalable non-production environments across both cloud and our on-premises platforms.

This role is a key enabler for our transformation agenda, supporting projects and applications with the environments they need to deliver on critical initiatives. You'll engage closely with project teams to scope requirements, stand up new environments, and manage ongoing BAU for our standard test environments.

A big focus is moving away from click-ops towards automation, reducing manual effort, and enabling smarter, more efficient delivery.

You'll work alongside colleagues in Apps, Quality, Integration, and the broader Infrastructure teams, as well as third-party delivery partners. This is a hands-on, high-impact opportunity for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology operations and project delivery.

We offer a hybrid work model, competitive salary, and the chance to work with a collaborative, forward-thinking team in Dunedin or Christchurch (Auckland may be considered).

Key Responsibilities
  • Environment operations: design, provision, configure, and maintain non-production environments across hybrid platforms.
  • Automation & efficiency: reduce manual processes, implement Infrastructure-as-Code, and optimise scheduling.
  • Stakeholder engagement: work with project and application teams to understand needs, negotiate scope, and ensure the right environment fit.
  • Planning & coordination: manage resource utilisation, scheduling, and refresh cycles, resolving conflicts and maintaining clear documentation.
  • Governance & security: apply best practice in access control, compliance, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Collaboration & leadership: support a culture of knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and strong vendor relationships.
About You

The core of this role is environment engineering, but what truly showcase you as a stand-out applicant would be the ability to engage closely with Project Leads to scope and deliver fit-for-purpose environments.

To be successful, you'll bring:

  • Strong experience in environment or infrastructure engineering, ideally with Azure and hybrid cloud platforms (multi-cloud experience a plus).
  • Familiarity with automation, scripting, and CI/CD tooling - you see automation as the future and want to drive it.
  • Knowledge of environment scheduling, dependency management, and non-production operations.
  • Hands-on exposure to virtualisation (VMware/Hyper-V), containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes), and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • The ability to explain technical concepts simply, influence decisions, and build trusted relationships.
  • A proactive, analytical mindset with strong organisational skills - able to balance multiple projects, stakeholders, and priorities.
Preferred Capabilities
  • Experience in enterprise or manufacturing environments.
  • Microsoft certifications.
  • Exposure to Power Platform and integration practices.
