Job summary

Tonkin + Taylor is seeking an Engineering Hydrologist / Water Engineer to join our growing Water team in New Zealand. The role suits intermediate- to senior-level practitioners with a strong hydrology foundation, applying skills across infrastructure and climate resilience projects.

Primary responsibilities include hydrological investigations, rainfall-runoff modelling, flood estimation, and contributing to flood and water resource studies. Based in any NZ office location, including Christchurch.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil, Environmental or Water Resources Engineering.
  • Experience in hydrology, flood estimation, catchment modelling, or water resources assessments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with hydrological analysis and modelling tools is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Chartered status or progress toward chartership would be an advantage.
  • Willingness to learn and apply hydrology to real-world projects.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake hydrological investigations, rainfall-runoff modelling, flood estimation and catchment assessments for water-related projects.
  • Support flood risk management, climate resilience, hydraulic modelling and flood modelling studies.
  • Assist with design and assessment of hydraulic structures, stormwater systems and water infrastructure.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams across the business.
  • Engage with clients, councils, infrastructure providers and stakeholders to support project delivery.
  • Contribute to proposals and client relationship growth where appropriate.
  • Support and mentor junior staff and contribute to technical excellence initiatives.
