Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora – Wellington, North Island

  • Permanent, full-time position based in Wellington.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.

We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

The primary purpose of the role is to oversee and support the effective management of risks in enabling services directorates, ensuring that risks are identified, assessed, and managed in line with Health NZ's risk management policy and framework and within risk appetite.

As part of the role, you will provide independent oversight of risk management activities, collaborate with the risk reporting manager to deliver high-quality risk reporting and insights, and will ensure your stakeholders are kept informed. You will be instrumental in embedding a strong risk culture across the organisation, establishing yourself as a trusted advisor to the enabling services functions. You will also contribute to organisation-wide risk maturity programmes and collaborate with risk resources within the team and across Health NZ to ensure risk management practices are consistent and support continuous improvement.

About you

You are a self-starter who takes ownership and gets things done, including the practical work needed to move priorities forward. You are comfortable working in complex and changing environments, and bring resilience, sound judgement, and a pragmatic approach when priorities change or issues arise. You hold a relevant tertiary qualification (a related professional qualification is desired), and have a minimum of 8 years' experience in Risk Management, including senior leadership experience, in complex environments that are still building risk maturity. You have a strong understanding of risk management frameworks and methodologies and have successfully applied them pragmatically across complex organisational settings.

You are a strategic, analytical thinker who connects organisational dynamics to risk implications and reporting. You intuitively understand people and complex situations, have strong stakeholder management skills, and have the ability to navigate complex environments.
