This role offers a unique opportunity to work in a vibrant multicultural community while providing top-notch emergency care. You will be part of a supportive environment that values ongoing training and development, ensuring you remain at the forefront of emergency medicine. Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
You will be joining a strong team of Emergency Consultants from around the world, along with clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. Our team supervises 18 resident medical officers (including registrars and senior house officers) and 6th-year medical students from the University of Otago. We are accredited for 2 years (Tier 2) training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, with a successful teaching program for the Part I ACEM examination and plans to develop a robust Part II program. Weekly, we have protected teaching time, including sessions in our simulation centre, for registrars, house officers, and students.
The Palmerston North Hospital ED handles approximately 48,000 adult and paediatric presentations annually, with an admission rate of about 30%. It is an Australasian Level 4 ED and regional trauma centre, experiencing a higher trauma workload due to agricultural injuries and road accidents. We operate a 24/7 trauma team, and have recently updated our trauma and disaster protocols in collaboration with surgical and anaesthetic colleagues. All acute services are available on-site except neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and plastic surgery, with transfers to Wellington or Hutt Hospital for these specialties.
We seek a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (or international equivalent), eligible for vocational or locum specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, to join our enthusiastic team at Palmerston North Hospital.
Manawatū offers a blend of city and rural living, with options ranging from peaceful villages to bustling towns and city life. It’s a family-friendly, accessible area with outdoor activities like beaches, ski fields, lakes, mountains, mountain biking, and hiking. The region boasts excellent schools and two tertiary institutions—Massey University and International Pacific College. The lifestyle supports a good work-life balance, with no traffic congestion and easy commutes. We encourage flexibility and work-life balance, and are open to discussing options.

We value diversity and inclusivity within our workforce, which enhances our ability to serve our community. We welcome applications from Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled individuals, and rainbow communities.
