Job description

Develop high-performance embedded Linux software for complex, real-world technology platforms.

Our client is an Australian technology company developing advanced software platforms for complex engineering applications. As they continue to grow, they are seeking an Embedded Linux Software Engineer to join a collaborative engineering team responsible for designing, developing and maintaining the Linux software that underpins their next-generation products.

Reporting to the Engineering Director, you'll play a key role in developing embedded Linux applications and services that support sophisticated software platforms. Working closely with Software, Systems, Electrical, Mechanical and Product Engineers, you'll contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from design through to integration, testing and deployment.

The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Designing and developing Linux applications using C/C++ across embedded and connected environments.
  • Building and maintaining distributed Linux services for communication, diagnostics and remote software management.
  • Developing automated test frameworks and supporting Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Maintaining and enhancing custom embedded Linux images and supporting low-level platform configuration.
  • Contributing to CI/CD pipelines, software tooling and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Validating software integration across complex hardware and software systems.
  • Participating in design reviews, code reviews and Agile development activities.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to troubleshoot technical issues and deliver reliable software solutions.
Your Background

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years' experience developing software within embedded Linux environments.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++.
  • A solid understanding of Linux internals, including process management, networking and system services.
  • Experience with Git, Docker and modern software development practices.
  • Experience debugging software on embedded hardware.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work across complex engineering projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
Experience in any of the following would be highly regarded:
  • Buildroot or Yocto.
  • Linux driver development.
  • Python and/or Go.
  • OTA update frameworks and deployment pipelines.
  • Networking protocols such as MQTT, HTTP or RPC.
  • Embedded communication protocols including CAN, Ethernet, SPI or I²C.
  • Experience developing embedded software within industrial automation, robotics, IoT, advanced manufacturing or other technology-focused environments.
What's On Offer

This is an opportunity to join an innovative Australian technology company working on technically challenging software products. You'll collaborate with a highly experienced engineering team, gain exposure to modern embedded Linux technologies, and work across the full software development lifecycle on complex, real-world engineering solutions. The role offers genuine technical ownership, a collaborative culture and excellent opportunities for professional growth.
