Te Kowhiringa | The Opportunity

The Leading Hand directs and controls the activities and operations of a crew on a day-to-day basis, optimizing the use of company resources and contributing to the successful completion of contracts, ensuring customer satisfaction and achievement of targets (Safety, Quality, Environment, Productivity, and profit).

Key Competencies
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction and maintenance.
  • Ensures projects are completed within deadlines and to specifications.
  • Manages documentation, health and safety, and staff training.
The core responsibilities of the role include:
  • Operations: Direct and control daily crew activities according to project plans and targets. Hold regular programme/resource and productivity meetings with the Site Supervisor to allocate tasks and ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Customer and Public Relations: Liaise with clients via the Site Foreman to ensure work meets standards and client satisfaction. Manage public concerns or requests, reporting to the Site Supervisor.
  • Staff Management: Assist in staff selection, coaching, and development. Provide onsite coaching to develop skills and maintain a focus on SQE.
  • People Development: Support team members in setting and achieving clear targets, providing coaching and support.
Nga Pukenga Motuhake | Important Skills
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in a similar role and knowledge of environmental protection principles.

Beneficial but not required:

  • Supervision of construction teams for delivery excellence.
  • Survey knowledge including calculating reduced levels and basic levelling.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, site plans, and specifications.
  • Skills in leading safe, productive, and efficient formwork, framing, and finishing.
  • Ability to direct temporary works and operate specialist equipment safely, including crane and dogman skills.
  • Commitment to safety and site responsibility.
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to participate in improvement, training, and mentoring.
  • Leadership and motivation skills for small teams.
  • Strong customer and commercial awareness on site.
