About the Role

We are seeking a specialist Geriatrician for a full-time (1.0 FTE), permanent position to join our inpatient acute frailty service, the OPAL (Older People's Acute Assessment & Liaison) Unit at Palmerston North Hospital. The role involves providing comprehensive geriatric care in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

This position does not require on-call duties for Elder Health, but participation in the General Medicine on-call roster is negotiable. The successful candidate will contribute to clinical quality initiatives, service development, and supervise junior medical staff and students.

About the Service

Elder Health at MidCentral offers specialist geriatric care across the Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Tararua districts. Our team includes Geriatricians, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and allied health professionals dedicated to compassionate, evidence-based care.

Our initiatives include:

  • OPAL Unit for acute geriatric care
  • Interface Geriatrics service in the Emergency Department
  • Inpatient ATR units: STAR 2 in Palmerston North and STAR 4 in Levin
  • Orthogeriatrics Inpatient Consult Liaison Service
  • OPAL-CS community service for frail older adults
  • Outpatient clinics with domiciliary visit capacity

About You

  • Hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Have Vocational Scope of Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and specialist qualifications in Geriatric Medicine
