Job description

At Transpower, we plan, build, operate, and maintain the National Grid — a $5B network of critical infrastructure that forms New Zealand's electricity transmission backbone. Our purpose is to enable a sustainable energy future for New Zealand, driving toward a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable, secure electricity system.

About The Team

Transpower's Grid Development division identifies and supports future grid needs over the next 30 years. We ensure the health and performance of our assets align with planned or potential generation investments, as well as the significant growth in electricity demand outlined in Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko - Empowering our Energy Future.

The Lines Asset Planning team in Wellington and Christchurch manages the asset portfolio for towers, poles, foundations, conductors, earthwire, insulators, and other components of the Transmission Lines network. This includes overseeing nearly 20,000 circuit kilometres of conductors and earthwire, along with more than 36,000 supporting structures. The team ensures investments are directed toward the right assets, at the right time, to achieve the most cost-effective whole-of-life outcomes, while continually managing risk in alignment with Transpower's strategic objectives.

About The Opportunity

Based in Wellington, this role offers the chance to shape the future of New Zealand's electricity grid. You'll be part of the Lines Asset Planning team, managing critical infrastructure and working on projects that contribute to the nation's energy future.

If you have asset management or electricity sector experience — or are just starting out — we'd love to hear from you. It's a great opportunity to manage Transmission Lines portfolios while expanding your knowledge in the sector.

You'll collaborate with teams across Transpower, helping to develop and deliver asset management plans, balance cost and risk, and contribute to creating standards and sustainable work plans.

The work is varied and interesting, and includes:

  1. Contributing to the integration of Asset Management plans for both Capex and Opex over a 15-year horizon.
  2. Forecasting asset replacement and refurbishment work using models and tools, supported by historical data.
  3. Supporting the development, review, and calibration of asset health models.
  4. Using whole-of-life costing principles to develop investment cases for asset replacement and refurbishment.
  5. Undertaking strategic initiatives, planning, and process improvement activities.

You'll provide advice and reporting to a range of stakeholders and input into capital and operational works plans for business planning and regulatory control period justification.

To understand the scope and impact of the work you'll be contributing to, take a look at our 2023 Asset Management Plan here.

What will you'll bring?

We'd love to hear from you if you have a background in electricity, asset management, consulting, or other utilities. You may have applied asset and risk management principles, and conducted options and cost-benefit analyses to support investment decisions.

This role has a strong focus on Transmission Lines, so an understanding of Transmission Lines or critical infrastructure would be ideal. However, we have experienced Transmission Lines experts who are happy to share their knowledge — so if you're passionate about asset management, we'll support you in developing your understanding of this vital area.

To be considered your CV and covering letter will demonstrate the following:
  1. Approximately 1 to 3 years of asset management knowledge or experience, gained through working within an asset management team or framework, or through equivalent experience and qualifications.
  2. Understanding of the energy sector and assets applicable to the sector.
  3. Proven ability to analyse and review large data sets.
  4. Commercial awareness, including financial analysis and risk management.
  5. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills — if you've been involved in continuous improvement or developed ways of working that delivered greater business value, please include this in your application.
  6. Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

While not essential, the following experience will be well regarded:

  1. A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, such as Engineering, Science, Computer Science and/or equivalent experience.
  2. Project management experience — including the ability to scope and manage strategic investigations using both internal resources and external consultants.
  3. Experience in or knowledge of corrosion management.
