Steel & Tube, New Zealand’s leading steel solutions provider with over 70 years of history, is seeking a hands-on (when required) Operations Manager to drive our Wellington galvanising plant. Reporting to the Regional Manager Southern, you will lead a team of 12-14, maintaining a safe, efficient, and high-performing, quality-focused production while fostering a united, high-performing team culture. This is a critical role within our newly formed Steel & Tube Galvanising Ltd, where you will navigate a challenging economic environment, engage all stakeholders, and uphold our legacy of excellence in infrastructure, manufacturing and now galvanising.

Job Description

You will oversee the entire galvanising process, from black steel preparation to finished galvanised product, while leading staff, managing all resource consents requirements, and compliance with ISO 9001 and AS/NZS 4680:2006 standards. Your leadership will optimise plant performance, manage key raw materials, and ensure customer satisfaction in a fast-paced, hands-on setting. This role requires genuine engagement with a tight-knit team, proactive problem-solving, and a commitment to employee safety and quality. You will also play a key role in creating an environment allowing your team to flourish, mentoring staff, driving continuous improvement, and maintaining strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead galvanising operations to meet employee safety, production and quality targets
• Optimise workflows, resources, and processes to maximise efficiency and profitability
• Ensure compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 and ISO 9001 standards
• Coach and develop staff, fostering morale and building leadership pipelines
• Manage maintenance, budgets, and stakeholder relationships to support plant success
  
  

About You

We’re seeking a leader with a genuine passion for people and manufacturing who thrives in a hands-on, dynamic environment. Previous galvanising experience would be advantageous.

You’ll Need

• Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a heavy manufacturing environment, ideally in a leadership role
• A proven ability to lead, motivate, engage with our team, and also as ability to diffuse conflict should it ever arise
• Excellent communication, planning, and problem-solving skills
• Desirable: Previous galvanising experience and potentially an engineering background
