Job summary

Ventia is seeking experienced Distribution Line Mechanics to lead crews performing de-energised network construction and maintenance in Waikato. Responsibilities include pole erection, cable jointing, and overhead/underground work up to 33kV, with a strong focus on safety and standards compliance.

You will mentor apprentices, manage site risks, and collaborate with teams to deliver reliable electricity distribution. This is a full-time role based in Waikato with standby requirements as needed.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years' relevant experience as a Distribution Line Mechanic.
• EWRB Licence is required.
• Experience in de-energised line work and underground cabling.
• Sound knowledge of electricity distribution health and safety practices.
• Ability to interpret plans, specs and technical information.
• Physically fit for climbing and outdoor work in varying weather.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support crews carrying out de-energised network construction and maintenance activities.
• Perform pole erection, structure replacement, cross-arm changes, and conductor jointing.
• Overhead line construction and maintenance from 240V to 33kV.
• Underground cable installation, maintenance, and civil coordination.
• Conduct site risk assessments and tailgate meetings; lead safety at worksites.
• Maintain equipment, vehicles and plant; mentor apprentices.
• Participate in after-hours standby rosters as required.
• Deliver work in line with company, client and industry standards.

This is a Full Time permanent position - 40 hours per week

About The Role

As a Distribution Line Mechanic, you will lead and support crews carrying out de-energised network construction and maintenance activities, including:

• Pole erection, structure replacement, cross-arm changes, and conductor jointing
• Overhead line construction and maintenance from 240V to 33KV
• Underground cable installation, maintenance, and civil coordination
• Site risk assessments, tailgate meetings, and worksite safety leadership
• Equipment, vehicle, and plant maintenance
• Mentoring apprentices and developing team capability
• Emergency response and participation in after-hours standby rosters when required
• Delivering work in line with company, client, and industry standards

What You'll Bring

• 2 - 3 year's of relevant work experience as a Distribution Line Mechanic
• EWRB Licence Required
• Demonstrated experience in de-energised line work and underground cabling
• Sound knowledge of electricity distribution industry health and safety practices
• Ability to interpret plans, specifications, and technical information
• Physical fitness for climbing, lifting, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• NZ Driver's licence (heavy vehicle licence advantageous)
• Cable jointing experience or training is highly desirable
