Job summary

Te Unua Museum of Southland is seeking a talented and technically minded Digital Designer - Technician to help deliver engaging, immersive visitor experiences across exhibitions. You will design, build and maintain digital exhibition systems, including interactive touchscreens, projections, and motion graphics, connecting audiences with Southland's stories.

Working with curators and preparators, you will apply UX/UI principles for accessible experiences and support a range of exhibition

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in digital design or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a similar role.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Experience creating motion graphics and screen-based experiences.
  • Strong understanding of audio-visual systems and interactive technologies.
  • Experience with digital displays, projection, touchscreens.
  • Knowledge of UX/UI principles and accessibility best practice.
  • Attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality work.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across teams.
  • Understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi perspectives where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Design and produce digital, motion, and screen-based content for exhibitions and installations.
  • Create motion graphics and multimedia content using Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Develop and maintain interactive exhibition experiences (touchscreens, kiosks, projections, LED systems).
  • Configure, test, and support exhibition hardware and digital technologies.
  • Collaborate with curators, designers, and preparators on planning, production, installation, and de-installation.
  • Prepare and optimise digital content for multiple platforms and environments.
  • Apply UX/UI principles to create intuitive visitor experiences.
  • Assist with creating other exhibition content, signage, publications, and branding.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and documentation for exhibition systems.

Te Unua Museum of Southland is seeking a talented and technically minded Digital Designer - Technician to help create and care for engaging, immersive, and interactive visitor experiences.

This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of design, storytelling, technology, and cultural heritage. You'll play a key role in delivering digital exhibition content, including interactive installations, motion graphics, and exhibition technologies to connect audiences with Southland's stories in meaningful and memorable ways.

Working closely with curators, designers, and preparators, you'll be responsible for designing, building, installing, and maintaining digital exhibition systems across our temporary and long-term exhibitions. From touchscreens and projection systems to motion graphics and immersive digital experiences, you'll combine creativity with technical expertise to bring exhibition content to life.

What You'll Do
  • Design and produce digital, motion, and screen-based content for exhibitions, programmes, and installations.
  • Create motion graphics, animations, and multimedia content using Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Develop and maintain interactive exhibition experiences, including touchscreens, kiosks, projections, and LED display systems.
  • Configure, test, and support exhibition hardware and digital technologies.
  • Collaborate with the wider museum team on exhibition planning, production, installation, and de-installation.
  • Prepare and optimise digital content for a range of platforms and exhibition environments.
  • Apply UX/UI principles to create intuitive and accessible visitor experiences for a diverse range of museum visitors.
  • Assist with the creation of other exhibition content, signage, publications, educational resources, museum branding, and other visitor experiences.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshooting, and documentation for exhibition systems.
What You'll Bring
  • A recognised tertiary qualification in digital design, graphic design, multimedia design, exhibition design, interactive media, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a similar creative and/or technical role.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Experience creating motion graphics, digital content, and screen-based experiences.
  • Strong understanding of audio-visual systems, digital hardware, and interactive technologies.
  • Experience working with digital displays, projection systems, touchscreens, or similar technologies.
  • Experience designing user-centred digital experiences, with an understanding of UX/UI principles and visitor engagement.
  • An awareness of accessibility best practice and a commitment to creating inclusive experiences for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to consistently deliver high-quality work.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work across creative, technical, and cultural disciplines.
  • An understanding of bicultural best practice and the ability to incorporate Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and mātauraka Māori perspectives where appropriate.
  • An appreciation of the role museums play in connecting communities with culture, heritage and lifelong learning through meaningful visitor experiences.

This is a permanent full-time position working 40 hours per week, between the hours of 8.00am - 5.00pm Monday - Friday, both days inclusive.
