Job summary

WorkSafe New Zealand is seeking a Data Engineer to design, build and maintain data infrastructure powering reporting, analytics and decision‑making across the organisation. You will develop ETL/ELT pipelines, ensure data quality and governance, and collaborate with analytics, architecture and security teams while leveraging Azure Synapse and PySpark.

Qualifications

  • Experience with data storage solutions including data warehouses and data lakes.
  • Experience developing and optimizing ETL/ELT processes.
  • Familiarity with government data standards, privacy frameworks and cloud platforms.
  • Proficiency with data modelling and database management.
  • Commitment to public service and ethical data use.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional teams.
  • Degree in computer science or related field and extensive comparable knowledge and experience.
  • Experience with Azure Synapse & PySpark preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain data infrastructure, including pipelines and storage solutions, to support reliable, secure and accessible data across the organisation.
  • Develop and optimise data pipelines for extraction, transformation and loading (ETL/ELT) to ensure efficient, scalable and reliable data processing and flow.
  • Ensure data quality and integrity by implementing validation, cleansing, reconciliation and error handling processes.
  • Monitor and maintain data platforms to ensure performance, reliability, scalability, and operational stability of data systems.
  • Support data governance, security and access controls to protect sensitive information and meet regulatory requirements.
