Job summary

New Zealand Government in Wellington City, NZ, is seeking an Intermediate Data Analyst to join the Data and Development team for a major data migration project. The role is on-site, permanent, and based in Wellington, focusing on remodelling our data warehouse for a Databricks-based Modern Data Platform.

You will analyse current warehouse structures, document data definitions and business rules, and collaborate with data architects, developers and business users to deliver accurate, testable

Qualifications

• Strong SQL skills, including the ability to understand complex queries, views and stored procedures.
• Experience analysing or reverse-engineering existing data warehouse processes.
• Experience translating high-level business requirements into detailed data requirements.
• Practical experience creating data flow diagrams, source-to-target mappings and entity relationship diagrams.
• Experience documenting data definitions, transformation rules, business rules and data lineage.
• Experience profiling data and investigating missing, inconsistent or poor-quality data.
• Knowledge of data warehouse modelling, including facts, dimensions and star schemas.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with close attention to detail.
• Clear and well-structured written communication.
• The ability to explain technical information to technical and non-technical people.
• Experience working with business subject matter experts and technical delivery teams.

Responsibilities

• Analysing existing SQL Server data warehouse structures and processes.
• Reading and reverse-engineering stored procedures, views and complex SQL queries.
• Tracing data from source systems through to warehouse and reporting outputs.
• Creating data flow diagrams, source-to-target mappings and entity relationship diagrams.
• Documenting data definitions, transformation rules, dependencies and lineage.
• Profiling data to identify missing values, inconsistencies and data quality issues.
• Identifying undocumented business rules and validating them with subject matter experts.
• Supporting logical and physical data modelling, including dimensional and star-schema models.
• Defining expected data outcomes to support testing and reconciliation.
• Working with business users, data architects, data warehouse developers, testers and reporting teams.
