Job description
Customer Service Officer (L1) - Part-time Students

Ready to put the flexibility in IRD? We think our Customer Service Officer role is for you, so look no further than us for a role that will work with your studies.

What is the role? - He aha te mahi?

This is a fast-paced, frontline role that's vital to our business. IRD does more than collect taxes - we fund and deliver programmes that support and care for New Zealanders.

You don't need to be a numbers expert - what matters is your customer-centric approach to improving customer experience.

Responsibilities
  • Be the first point of contact for a wide range of customers
  • Respond to emails and calls from individuals, families, and businesses
  • Help customers understand and meet their obligations
  • Provide solutions and calculate options when communicating plans

Want to work together? - E hiahia ana koe ki te mahi tahi?

We're looking for people who are passionate, keen learners and committed to what they do. You'll be joining a team of Customer Service Officers who have come from all walks of life who wish to balance study and work - all are welcome!

Ideally, you will possess the following skills:

  • Great communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Curiosity and problem solving
  • Resilience
  • Digital savviness (we'll teach you the ins and outs of our unique tools)
  • Comfortable with numbers
  • Customer-focused mindset

We offer a supportive team environment and great opportunities to grow and learn, both within the Customer Service Officer role or if you want to spread your wings into other areas of the business. We invest in you from day one - providing a well-mapped out training programme that allows you to understand our tax and social policy products.

We currently have opportunities for people to join us as part-time employees working full-time hours for training, before moving to part-time hours during term time. This allows you to fit your work around university studies.

Start Date: 24 November 2025
Full-time hours: Until approx 20 February 2026 (for training)
Part-time hours: Minimum 20 hours/week during term time may be worked between Monday - Friday: 8am-6:15pm, and Saturday: 8am-5:05pm (minimum 3-hour shifts)
Salary: $60,385 per annum (pro-rated to hours worked)

If you're studying in Manukau, Takapuna, Hamilton, Wellington, Upper Hutt, Christchurch, or Dunedin then this could be the role for you!

Additional benefits

Transferable locations: Train in one site and work from another - perfect for visiting the Whanau for the summer and study in another location

Office closures: Statutory holidays and 29-31 December (annual leave required for these 3 days)

You must be available for the full training period (24 Nov 2025 - 20 Feb 2026), excluding public holidays and the Christmas/New Year close-down.

This role may not suit students with study-related work placements that prevent meeting the minimum 20-hour weekly requirement.
