Job summary

The Ministry of Education in Invercargill seeks a permanent, full-time Curriculum Advisor to work with schools, kura and early learning services to deliver high-quality teaching and learning programmes aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum.

You will collaborate with leadership teams and kaiako to implement curriculum, assessment and aromatawai changes, support effective teaching practices, strengthen curriculum delivery and improve outcomes for all learners.

Qualifications

  • Strong curriculum delivery expertise and thorough knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum.
  • Recent school-based experience, ideally within primary education.
  • Deep understanding of the science of learning, effective teaching practices, and assessment approaches.

As part of the Otago/Southland Curriculum Advisory Team, this permanent, full-time role is based in Invercargill, supporting schools, kura and early learning services to deliver high-quality teaching and learning programmes aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum. Experience in primary education settings is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will work with leadership teams, teachers and kaiako to implement curriculum, assessment and aromatawai changes through a whole-school approach. This includes supporting effective teaching practices, strengthening curriculum delivery, and improving learning outcomes for all learners.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting implementation of the New Zealand Curriculum using evidence-based pedagogical practices.
  • Delivering tailored support aligned with local needs and government priorities.
  • Facilitating professional learning to strengthen pedagogical content knowledge.
  • Building collaborative networks and sharing effective practices across education communities.
  • Supporting schools and kura to lead and sustain curriculum and assessment change.

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Strong curriculum delivery expertise and thorough knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum.
  • Recent school-based experience, ideally within primary education.
  • Deep understanding of the science of learning, effective teaching practices, and assessment approaches.
  • Proven experience leading whole-school curriculum planning, implementation and change.
  • Strong facilitation, coaching and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to work effectively with kaiako, teachers and leaders to build capability and drive improvement.
  • Familiarity with te ao Māori and an understanding of te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori.
  • A full New Zealand driver licence, as travel is required.
  • A commitment to upholding the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
