Job summary

Nelson Marlborough Health is seeking a Consultant Vascular Surgeon to join the vascular team across the Nelson Marlborough district. The role is based at Nelson Hospital with duties across both Nelson Hospital and Wairau Hospital, delivering both acute and planned vascular care.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team and participate in an after-hours on-call roster, with some time in the Canterbury district to support regional vascular services.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver high‑quality vascular care across the full spectrum of vascular conditions.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality care across the complete spectrum of vascular surgery, including PAD, carotid surgery, open and endovascular aneurysm repair, dialysis access, and acute trauma.
• Combine strong open surgical proficiency with endovascular skills to expand local treatment options for the Top of the South population.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive environment that prioritizes patient safety, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Aboutthe Role

This is a new role established to helpincrease the vascular service delivery across the Nelson MarlboroughDistrict.

This is an excellent opportunityto help shape and develop vascular services and respond to the growing needacross the Nelson Marlborough district. Basedat Nelson Hospital, this is a district-wide role, with the successful candidate providing clinical care across both Nelson Hospital and Wairau Hospital, Blenheim. You will contribute to the delivery of both acute and planned vascular care, helping to provide a safe, sustainable and responsive vascular service across the Nelson Marlborough district.

Youwill work alongside a dedicated team including a fellow Vascular SMO, a NursePractitioner, an Interventional Radiologist, a non-training registrar and thewider MDT team.You will participate in an after-hours on call roster.

Aspart of the wider Te Waipounamu district, you will be expected to spend sometime in the Canterbury district, participating on the wider South Islandcollegial Vascular service.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Thisis a unique opportunity to grow and develop Nelson’s Vascular Surgeryservice. Beyond clinical delivery, thispost offers a unique platform to lead the growth and strategic modernisation ofthe vascular service. You will have direct scope to expand local open andendovascular capabilities, establish innovative care pathways, and enhancetertiary collaboration with Christchurch Hospital to shape regional vascularsurgery.

The vascularservice provides specialist assessment and management for patients with a broadrange of vascular conditions across the Nelson Marlborough region. Services are delivered across NelsonHospital and Wairau Hospital, with the service supporting both planned andurgent vascular care.

The service worksclosely with other surgical and medical specialties and has established linkswith tertiary services in Christchurch for patients requiring highlyspecialised vascular assessment or procedures that cannot be provided locally.

You will join amultidisciplinary surgical team working across Nelson and Wairau Hospitals. Oursurgical teams work closely with anaesthesia, radiology, emergency medicine,intensive care medicine, nursing, and allied health colleagues. The closeworking relationships across the district provide a supportive environment fordelivering patient-centred care while also contributing to service improvementand teaching.

Theideal applicant will:

• Deliverhigh-quality care across the complete spectrum of vascular surgery,including PAD, carotid surgery, open and endovascular aneurysm repair,dialysis access, and acute trauma.


• Combinestrong open surgical proficiency with endovascular skills to expand localtreatment options for the Top of the South population.


• HoldFRACS (Vascular) or equivalent, with eligibility for an Annual PracticingCertificate in the Vocational Scope of Vascular Surgery with MCNZ.


• Foster acollaborative, inclusive environment that prioritizes patient safety, clinicalgovernance, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
