A leading health organization in New Zealand is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join their Mental Health Emergency Department team. This senior role involves providing expert psychiatric assessments in emergency settings and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver culturally safe and high-quality care for individuals with acute mental health needs. The ideal candidate will be vocally registered in Psychiatry and possess expertise in risk management and crisis intervention. About the role

We are seeking an experienced ConsultantPsychiatrist (Senior Medical Officer) to join our Mental Health EmergencyDepartment (MH/ED) team, working across the Wellington and Hutt HospitalEmergency Departments.

This senior role is an exciting opportunityto provide expert psychiatric assessment and intervention in a fast-pacedemergency setting. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality,culturally safe, person and whānau-centred care to individuals presenting withacute mental health needs or psychological distress.

You will work closely with ED clinicians,MHAIDS teams, and community partners to enable rapid, effective care planning,reduce avoidable admissions, and support safe and timely transitions.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our MH/ED team is a dynamic,multidisciplinary service operating across Wellington and Hutt Hospitals. Weare committed to delivering rapid, person-centred care for those in crisis,while supporting integration between emergency and mental health services.

You will join a growing team that includes a nursepractitioner (intern) and specialty clinical nurses. Together, we are focusedon improving access, equity, and outcomes for tāngata whaiora and their whānau.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS ) spans across Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3 sub-region - greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa.

About you

  • Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ )
  • FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Expertise in acute psychiatric assessment, crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, and risk management
  • A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and commitment to equitable, culturally safe practice
  • Proven leadership and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary settings
  • The ability to thrive in complex and dynamic environments, using initiative and sound judgement
