Where you’ll be working: Taranaki Base Hospital – New Plymouth

Our Community Mental Health team supports clients aged 18 and older, using diverse therapies including CBT, family interventions, mindfulness, and DBT. We collaborate with local schools to improve community outcomes.

You’ll join a team of 14 psychiatrists, working alongside dedicated medical, nursing, and allied health professionals. We provide care for individuals with complex needs in the community. There are also 4 training registrars and medical students from the University of Auckland, offering teaching and supervision opportunities.

You will learn about and incorporate New Zealand’s unique cultures into your practice.

The service provides a range of specialist services, including:

  • 23-bed acute inpatient unit for adults, older people, and children/adolescents
  • Mental Health Services for Older People
  • Alcohol and Drug Services
  • Consult Liaison
  • Acute Assessment via the Mental Health Assessment Team
  • Co Response Service for 111 calls

As part of MHAS, you will:

  • Provide specialist consultant services
  • Collaborate with other departments daily
  • Mentor junior medical staff
  • Work in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings, including crisis work
  • Participate in a 1:10 on-call roster

Skills and experience required:

  • Vocational registration or eligibility with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams and provide person-centered care
  • Strong communication skills and cultural competence
  • Engagement with providers, consumers, and organizations to improve services
  • Results-oriented with good relationship-building skills
