Job description

Waikato Hospital, HamiltonFixed-Term, Full-Time | Immediate Start until November 2026

Specialists with current APC in the Emergency Medicine Scope of Practice

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Specialist to join our team at Waikato Hospital on a fixed-term, full-time basis from now until November 2026.

This is an opportunity to practise Emergency Medicine in one of New Zealands busiest and most diverse Emergency Departments, caring for approximately 90,000 presentations each year.

Waikato Hospital provides emergency care for the Hamilton and wider Waikato population, while also serving as a tertiary referral centre for the Te Manawa Taki region.

As a senior clinician, you will provide expert Emergency Medicine care while contributing to the leadership, supervision and development of our junior workforce.

You will be supported by a collaborative team of Emergency Physicians and multidisciplinary colleagues, with opportunities to become involved in education, quality improvement, service development, and professional leadership activities.

Our service is based within a major tertiary hospital offering the full range of medical and surgical specialties, including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastics and Psychiatry, across a campus of more than 600 beds.

About the Team

Join a welcoming and high-performing team of approximately 30 Emergency Physicians who are passionate about delivering exceptional patient care and supporting one another.

The department has a strong culture of teaching and lifelong learning, with oversight of around 35 junior medical staff.

There are excellent opportunities to contribute to both bedside and formal education programmes while maintaining a broad clinical Emergency Medicine practice.

Our clinicians are actively involved in leadership and professional organisations at both national and international levels, reflecting the depth of expertise and opportunities available within the department.

About You

You will be a skilled and collegial Emergency Physician who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary environment and is committed to delivering high-quality patient care.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • FACEM qualification or an equivalent international specialist qualification
  • Broad experience across all aspects of Emergency Medicine
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • A commitment to teaching, mentoring and continuous professional development
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Vocational registration in Emergency Medicine and an Annual Practising Certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand
