Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is

About the Role:

Applications are welcomed for Specialist Anaesthetists to join our team at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora
Counties Manukau, Auckland New Zealand.

We can offer you an interesting and diverse workload where you would be part of a team who contribute to the
health and wellbeing of our South Auckland community. You will be expected to have a generalist skill set,
though our department is also strengthened by staff with subspecialty training and experience.
At Counties Manukau our anaesthetists work together to support a wide range of surgical specialties, providing
high quality care for both elective surgery and a busy acute workload.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Counties Manukau serves a culturally diverse population
of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland. Reflecting the principles of Te Tiriti o
Waitangi, we aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and aim for equitable
outcomes for all. We are a friendly department with a culture of continuous improvement. We have weekly
morbidity and mortality meetings and have an active internal education program. We are part of the ANZCA
clinical trials network, currently enrolling patients on several research studies. You can look forward to a warm
welcome and strong support from colleagues.

We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes per year across a wide variety of surgical specialties,
including, general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, burns, plastics and
obstetrics and gynaecology. Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics and our tertiary obstetric
centre delivers over 7000 babies annually.

Our district offers several regional specialist services. We are home to the National Burns Centre, and we
receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial
surgery and rigid bronchoscopy.

In addition, the anaesthetic department provides a small but increasing amount of off-the-floor work in MRI,
CT, interventional radiology, a newly built gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural
sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac catheterisation lab.

We also provide acute and complex pain management across both sites and some of our anaesthetists
participate in a busy outpatient chronic pain service

About you:

As an anaesthetist you will have a true generalist skillset, and the ability to work together as a team to solve
problems using individuals’ subspecialty interests and experience. Further to this you will be able to
demonstrate:

• clinical experience in some, or all the areas listed above, and will
• either be registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• be a team player
• treat patients and staff with kindness
• contribute to our collective skillset with a variety of clinical and non-clinical interests and skills
• be ready and willing to participate in departmental administrative, quality assurance and educational
activities.
