Job description

At Hospice Tairāwhiti, we believe everyone deserves compassionate, high-quality care at the end of life, in the place they call home.

We’re looking for a Registered Nurse to join our community nursing team and make a real difference in the lives of patients and their whānau across Tairāwhiti.

This is an opportunity to step away from the pressures of acute care and into a role where relationships matter, holistic care is valued, and you have the time to provide support that genuinely impacts people when they need it most.

Based in beautiful Tairāwhiti, you’ll enjoy a lifestyle that offers balance, short commutes, stunning beaches, and a strong sense of community, while developing specialist skills in palliative care.

Hospice Tairāwhiti provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and whānau throughout the Tairāwhiti region. Our team is passionate about delivering compassionate, person-centred care that honours the wishes, dignity, and cultural values of those we serve.

About the Role | Te Tūnga

This permanent 0.8 FTE position is part of our community nursing service – hours negotiable upwards if desired.

Working Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 5.00pm, you’ll provide specialist palliative nursing care in patients’ homes throughout the Tairāwhiti region. You’ll work closely with patients, whānau, GPs, specialist services, and other healthcare providers to coordinate care and support people to remain comfortable and well supported in their chosen environment.

The role also participates in a shared after-hours on-call roster.

  • Provide holistic, patient- and whānau-centred palliative care
  • Undertake clinical assessments and develop care plans
  • Coordinate care alongside GPs and other health providers
  • Support and educate whānau in home-based care
  • Participate in the on-call roster with the wider team
About You | Te Manako

You are a compassionate and capable Registered Nurse who enjoys working autonomously while remaining connected to a supportive team.

You may come from a hospital, community, primary care, aged care, or specialist nursing background and be looking for a role that offers greater connection with patients and whānau.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Current New Zealand Registered Nurse practising certificate
  • Minimum two years’ post-registration nursing experience
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
  • A commitment to culturally safe practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence
  • New Zealand work rights

Experience in palliative care is welcomed but not essential. We are committed to supporting the right candidate to develop specialist knowledge and skills in this rewarding area of nursing.

  • Meaningful work that makes a difference to patients and whānau every day
  • Ongoing education and professional development, including specialist palliative care training
  • No rotating shifts
  • Monday to Friday hours supporting work-life balance, with a shared after-hours on-call roster with supportive clinical team.
  • Community-based nursing with autonomy, variety, short commutes, and free onsite parking

If you’re looking for a nursing role where relationships matter, your work has real meaning, and you’ll be supported to grow professionally, we’d love to hear from you.
