Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, is seeking a Community Engagement Worker to support the National Bowel Screening Programme. In this role you will engage communities, provide education on the bowel screening process, and help participants navigate from outreach to programme completion.

You will build relationships with whānau, healthcare providers, and community groups, contributing to equitable health outcomes in the region.

Qualifications

• Experience working with communities, whānau, or within health, social, or community services.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills for diverse people.
• Knowledge of Bay of Plenty communities and established local networks.
• Excellent organisation and administrative skills with high attention to detail.
• Ability to work Monday to Sunday 8.00am–4.30pm.
• A current full NZ driver’s licence.
• Commitment to culturally responsive practice and improving equitable health outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Support eligible people aged 58–74 through the bowel screening journey, from outreach to programme completion.
• Engage with individuals, whānau and community organisations to promote participation.
• Coordinate outreach activities and provide education about the programme.
• Maintain effective administration and reporting to support programme success.

About the Role

Join the National Bowel Screening Programme and play an important role in improving the health and wellbeing of people across the By of Plenty. As a Community Engagement Worker, you will support eligible people aged 58 to 74 years throughout their bowel screening journey, from initial outreach and education through to programme completion. This varied community-based role combines engagement, advocacy, health promotion, and administration, offering the opportunity to build strong relationships with individuals, whānau, community organisations, and healthcare providers while contributing to the continued success of this life saving programme.

About the Team/Service/Location

The National Bowel Screening Programme team is a small, supportive, and passionate group committed to increasing participation and improving equitable health outcomes across the Bay of Plenty. Working across both urban and rural communities, you will enjoy a varied role that takes you beyond the office, connecting with people in their communities, over the phone, and through local networks. What you will bring:

• Experience working with communities, whānau, or within health, social, or community services
• Strong communication and relationship building skills with the ability to engage a diverse range of people
• Knowledge of the Bay of Plenty communities and established local networks
• Excellent organisation and administrative skills with strong attention to detail
• Confidence working independently while contributing effectively within a small team
• A flexible approach with the ability to work Monday to Sunday between 8.00am and 4.30pm
• A current full NZ drivers licence
• A commitment to culturally responsive practice and improving equitable health outcomes
