Job summary

Tonkin & Taylor Limited in Invercargill is seeking a motivated CMT Technician to carry out laboratory and field testing on soil, concrete and aggregate for a 6-month fixed term contract. You’ll work directly with samples, combining practical skills, technical accuracy and a strong commitment to quality.

This active, physically demanding role may involve early starts and occasional overtime, with a focus on reliable results to support projects that help shape communities in New Zealand.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years experience in laboratory and field testing of soil, concrete and aggregate.
• Experience in an accredited civil engineering laboratory based in New Zealand.
• Physically capable of handling samples up to 25 kg.
• Proficient in Excel and Word.
• Safety-conscious and detail-oriented.
• Clear communicator and effective team player.
• Holds a full New Zealand driver licence.

Responsibilities

• Carry out laboratory and field testing in accordance with New Zealand and international methods.
• Work efficiently to achieve timely turnaround and meet requirements.
• Take personal responsibility for allocated work and manage testing within hours.
• Communicate with Team Leader if deadlines cannot be met.

Job description

We’re looking for a motivated CMT Technician to carry out laboratory and field testing to support an important construction project in Invercargill for a 6-Month Fixed Term Contract. You’ll work directly with soil and aggregate samples, combining practical skills, technical accuracy and a strong commitment to quality.

This is an active, physically demanding role that can involve working in challenging, dirty or changing environmental conditions. Early starts, late finishes and occasional overtime may be required. This position will play a vital role in delivering reliable results for our customers and supporting projects that help shape our communities.

What you’ll be doing

• Carry out laboratory and field testing in accordance with New Zealand and international test methods and the company’s management system.
• Work efficiently to achieve timely turnaround, meet customer requirements and support profitability.
• Take personal responsibility for allocated work and ensure testing and management tasks are completed on time and within budgeted hours.
• Communicate promptly with the Team Leader if deadlines cannot be met.
• Follow business processes to ensure consistent, high-quality results.
• Work collaboratively with other team members on projects when required.
• Prioritise your own safety and wellbeing, as well as that of your colleagues, and take practical steps to prevent harm.
• Participate positively in learning and development opportunities.
• Ensure you are adequately trained or supervised before undertaking field or testing work.
• Represent the Engineer on site by acting as their eyes and ears.
• Record relevant anecdotal information provided by landowners and neighbours.

About You

• 3 – 5 years experience in the laboratory and field testing of soil, concrete and aggregate.
• Previous experience working in an accredited civil engineering laboratory based in New Zealand.
• Physically capable of handling samples up to 25 kg.
• Proficient in Excel and Word.
• Safety-conscious and detail-oriented.
• A clear communicator and effective team player.
• Hardworking, self-motivated and positive.
• Customer-focused.
• Holds a full New Zealand driver licence
