Job summary

RV Tangaroa, New Zealand's premier ocean-going research vessel, seeks a seasoned Chief Engineer to lead the engineering function from Wellington. As the senior engineering leader, you will ensure safe, reliable operation of propulsion, power generation, and hydraulic systems while guiding a skilled team through challenging marine campaigns.

You will own the maintenance programme, manage defects, maintain records, and coordinate with the Master and Engineering Manager to keep voyages

Qualifications

• You’ll hold MEC1 Chief Engineer (ECE) qualification.
• Minimum 5 years' experience as Chief Engineer.
• Maritime Medical certification current.
• Ancillary STCW certificates including AFF, PISC and Medical First Aid current.

Responsibilities

• Lead onboard engineering team with clear priorities and accountability.
• Ensure safe, reliable and compliant operation of vessel machinery and systems.
• Own onboard maintenance programme, defects, and engineering records.
• Communicate condition and support requirements to Master and Engineering Manager.
