Job summary

Halter in Auckland is seeking a seasoned embedded software engineer to own the guidance firmware and virtual fencing logic for livestock collars. You’ll design, implement and test code that runs millions of cattle operations across farms worldwide, 24/7, on constrained hardware.

You'll work with firmware, backend and animal science teams, shaping algorithms, state machines and data protocols, using C++23 on FreeRTOS with careful power and memory constraints.

Qualifications

• Shipping software for resource-constrained systems (embedded, consoles or RT engines).
• Experience with real-time constraints and low-power systems.
• Strong debugging skills for field issues using logs/telemetry.
• Proven ability to design and reason about geometry, timing and state machines.
• Experience taking ownership from design through production support.
• Ability to give and receive feedback in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Own the guidance firmware and virtual fencing logic for livestock collars.
• Design guidance algorithms, state machines and geometry for virtual fences and paths.
• Build in modern C++ (C++23) on FreeRTOS with power/memory constraints.
• Debug hard, intermittent field-only problems using logs and telemetry.
• Collaborate with firmware, backend and frontend engineers, animal experts.
• Contribute to system quality and tooling to prevent issues before paddock deployment.
• Mentor other engineers through design discussions and code reviews.
